Findings

Maison Alhambra is the most prolific clone house, producing 72 of the 348 clones in this dataset. #
Pendora Scents is the most accurate clone house, averaging 7.18/10 similarity across 22 fragrances. #
Only 1 of 348 clones score 9 or more out of 10 for similarity — a clone that is indistinguishable from its original is rare, not typical. #
The average clone scores 6.56/10 for similarity to its original. #
3.2% of clone listings (11 of 348) publish a note pyramid identical to the original’s — the note list is copied along with the scent. #

How close do clones actually get?
Distribution of similarity scores across all 348 pairs. The market clusters at “clearly the same idea, audibly not the same fragrance”.
The biggest measured savings on a genuinely close clone
Restricted to clones scoring 8/10 or better for similarity — a large saving on a poor match is not a saving. Prices are typical retail figures, not live retailer prices.

Methodology
Sample. 348 designer-to-clone pairs covering 134 designer fragrances. A pair enters the dataset only after both sides are verified against a retail listing; unverified rows are excluded here and from the site.
Scoring. Each pair is scored 0–10 on similarity, longevity and value by an AI comparison of the two note pyramids and their published performance, using a fixed rubric. How We Score sets out the dimensions and their weights.
Prices. Typical retail prices in USD, read off retail listings, for the most commonly sold size. They are not live prices and will drift; treat them as an order of magnitude, which is all a 5×–20× price gap requires.
Why the median, not the mean. The median saving is 84%; the mean is 80.1%. The mean is pulled upward by a handful of $400+ niche originals with $20 clones. We publish the median, and we do not publish a ratio of averages, which would give a higher number that does not describe any actual pair.
Known limits. Scores are an AI reading of published note data, not gas chromatography or a blind panel. Clone houses reformulate without notice. And 11 listings in this dataset publish the original’s own note pyramid verbatim, so their “notes” are the marketing claim rather than an independent description — which is itself one of the findings above.
